Hébert method

Hébert method

Let’s talk about the Herbert method. This method about exploring all different aspects of fitness.

Georges Hébert has left abundant literature (a dozen books), and it is interesting to note that these ideas went far beyond simple physical education. Hébert advocated an integral education that concerned both physical activities and values called “virile” (will, courage …) or moral education. The end goal is, according to Hébert, to be “strong to be useful”. Overall, Hébert’s ideas are similar to the naturist movement in vogue at the beginning of the 20th century: natural physical education is only the first step towards developing a way of life and naturist thought that would bring man together of nature, in contrast to the “civilized” life that removed it.

The basic postulate of the Hébert method, as a method of muscular reinforcement, is quite simple: in the natural state, primitive animals or humans have excellent physical condition and ideal musculature. The method developed by Hébert is therefore not really a training program, but rather an adaptation of movements practiced in the natural state by the “primitive” man: no static exercises like pull-ups or push-ups, only exercises in motion, that Georges Hébert ranked in 10 categories:

  • walking
  • the race
  • the jump
  • climb it
  • the sunrise
  • the quadruped
  • to throw it
  • the balance
  • defence
  • swimming

In his program work on new skill week of one of the above categories for 12-16 weeks, which gives you a full workout, all-around athleticism, and proper skill development.

So, for example first 12 weeks you work on the skills of defence (boxing, wrestling, etc) after that period than you go into climbing work skills of climbing for 12 weeks.
