Day to day fitness

Here I am talk about day-to-day fitness. Fitness can be part of your lifestyle while also not impeding it. My fitness plans are about 80/20 rule only 3 times a week for that very reason is this is the most effective way for drug free athletes to build muscle and strength. But in this section is just about changing what fitness can really  mean and to show fitness can be part of life for long time. Sometimes simple changes such as walking instead of driving somewhere. Walking, cycling, swimming and sports will help to keep you fit.

Goals are great and you can still have fitness gals as you age but I want to have long term view of fitness that will have healthy for you as age up to 90s or 100s. look at Kirk Douglas the actor one of his most famous roles was staring as Spartacus in the film Spartacus with famous line I am Spartacus, No I am Spartacus.

I first hear about Kirk Douglas fitness process. From an old interview from with Arnold Schwarzenegger who would be his prime from the late 70s talking working with Kirk Douglas on the film The Villain. But also talk about how fit Kirk Douglas was at the time would do all forms of exercise when Kirk Douglas was done playing tennis, he would go lift some weights and then might do run. Arnold said how that impressed him and inspired him. Keep in mind this was prime Arnold. At the time Kirk Douglas was in his 60s. Kirk Douglas who went on to live until age of 103-year-old he was pretty healthy for his age. But all though his life, fitness has been part of his life. In the film Tough Guys their famous scene of Kirk Douglas jumping rope doing all the jumping rope tricks at time of scene he was 70. I will highly recommend that you watch this scene on YouTube. All though his life fitness has been part of his live not only has help him as actor but also aging process he was still in pretty good health for someone who over 100. Even after suffered a severe stroke, which impaired his ability to speak that happen in 1997 he was still in good health. Fitness not only calm himself because of endorphins. It also taught him about planning, determination and discipline. Also, fitness gave him enjoyment and fun. Fitness helped him though out his life as famous actor producer, director and writer but also author of both non-fiction and fiction in fact in 2008, he was believed to be the oldest celebrity blogger in the world. Having strong body help to keep mind strong to this is something ancient Greeks talked about believe.

In an interview with Merv Griffin on the Merv Griffin show. He talks about first time came to Hollywood in 1945. He was skinny kid, he was living with roommate who was another out of work actor, they both were living in a cheap apartment doing odd jobs to make ends meet. He thought that if I could build my body up it might help him get some acting jobs. So, he set away Charles Atlas course. “I think it cost me $35, which was a lot of money back in those days”, but after six months he didn’t really get results he was looking at. In the meantime, his roommate had been going out few hours in the evening. Kirk though he was doing extra work or just meeting friends.

“But I noticed my roommate was looking much bigger and stronger. So, I asked him what he had been doing? He told me he had been going to the YMCA every night for the last 6 months. He’d go there and lift weights and swim in the pool.

He took off his shirt and I couldn’t believe the muscles he had! Broad shoulders, bulging biceps and trim muscular waist.

Needless to say, I chucked Chuck Atlas in the trashcan!! [loud audience laughter] And then I headed out to the YMCA with him every night, I think I paid $5 a month for membership dues? Within 6 months I had added 25lbs. of muscle on my frame and felt stronger and better than at any point in my life (up till then).

Merv: Did it help get you acting jobs?

Kirk Douglas: I really believe it was paramount to my success. Studio executives suddenly started to take notice of me, and the rest is history.

And Merv….do you know who my roommate was?

Merv: No, who???

Kirk Douglas: Hercules himself…..STEVE REEVES!!!!! [audience bursts into wild applause and cheering!!!”

I am showing fitness can be part of live up until very old age. Even at the age of 103 Kirk was still working out Every Day with a personal trainer. Of course, his fitness workout has change lot that still impressive. That although key thing of life learning to adapt to changes.

Not only making fitness part of your life is important so is self-talk. Talking about his physique in Champion he said That’s not bad is it, for a guy that’s only 41 years old,”. This self-talk really helps with fitness and all aspects of life. Keep in mind he was born in 1912 it was common for people give up on there body in their 50s for some people they just had rough life but many people they just didn’t take care of it and the body is like the mind you still need to do maintenance work.

Here some other old man who may fitness part of their life. I really talking about these examples to inspire you as you get older but also to give examples to people you know who know that are older that are giving up on their body.

  • 89-year-old Joe Stockinger deadlifts 405lb / 184kg a weight most skinny teenagers won’t be able to lift this weight. https://www.YouTube.com/watch?v=si93qAtdPiU
  • Swimmer, 99, ‘breaks world record’ in Australia George Corones clocked 56.12 seconds at an official event in Queensland – a new benchmark for the 100-104 age category.

George Corones said he was a keen swimmer in his youth but only began swimming again aged 80. This show it never too late. Training for swimming he said “At this age it takes a while to get going… you get exhausted much more easily, but if you do it sensibly, the rewards are astronomical,” this improved life not only is body but his social life. He was getting coach all the people he would meet at the swimming club. But he got huge buzz in be world record holder. Just look Joe Stockinger deadlifts 405lb 89 years of age. Not only body is strong but inspired people. In local gym person in great shape or the really strong guy but the old lad that still good shape and is still after it. Not only inspired but give buzz to the person that, that person.

There was documentary about I think Roy Wood who teach Catch Wrestling (old form of wrestling with submissions) in The Snake Pit. The snake pit is famous in the MMA because the small club in Wigan in the UK lineage produced fighter like Ken Shamrock, Frank Shamrock, Josh Barnett and Kazushi Sakuraba. This might have be Roy or Jack Mountord another catch wrestler coach but in a documentary they talked about even though they’re in their 60s pretty much felt good when meet people on the street they ask are you still teaching wrestling said yes. Of course, the coach was of retirement age the main reason he was doing it because he love it. He said made proud when run into people ask him, he still doing the wrestling and he said yes. That big lesson just because you get older does not mean you have to give up something you love sure you may not be strong or fast but finds way around it and adapt. Hélio Gracie of the Gracie family still training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu up until his death at age of 95 sure he trained different and sparring partners when easier on him because of age but he was still training.

There’s also the funny story off Burglar being left bruised and bleeding by retired boxer who was age 72 that mans name was Frank Corti.

“who served with the Royal Engineers in North Africa from 1956-58, dodged the knife and punched Gregory McCalium, 23, twice in the face, giving him a black eye and a swollen lip. He then restrained the attacker until police arrived.”

McCalium, a barman, was given a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence at Oxford Crown Court on Monday for aggravated burglary and was told by the judge he had “got what he deserved”.

The court heard Mr Corti was at home in Botley, Oxford, with his wife Margaret, 72, when McCalium, a neighbour, forced his way in at 8am on Aug 19 last year. McCalium was drunk.

Speaking after the case, Mr Corti said: “I was scared when he first drew the knife, but my old training must have kicked in because I just punched him as hard as I could and he went down like a sack of spuds.”

These story show fitness part of life the stories of 100-year-old running marathons and people in 100 still doing yoga.

There quote I like “It’s incredible what can happen when you stop driving with the emergency brake on,” this phrase can be said young people but this apply to people I am talking about even in old age they still push themselves (obviously knowing when to take break). Many people when reach certain age they think they have to give up but these people show that even old age you can still push yourself which inspires others. One of the many reason people think that people Okinawan in Japan the Birthplace of Karate. Has one of the highest rates of centenarians in the world, by this way the centenarians are very healthy. Their lot of reason for this their diet, their lifestyle a strong sense of community. But one of the reasons is simply seeing other people live longer inspired other people to live longer. Even with Kirk Douglas he was inspired gain muscle from his roommate. But I have seen this countless times in gym one friends start to get muscle which inspired other. One friend start squatting 140kg something they all though was impossible soon they are all able to do. This phenomenon happens in all walk of life. For example, Mount Everest was once though impossible to climb. Now so many people are climbing this mountain “There Are So Many Climbers on Everest That Two People Died in a Traffic Jam”. I have seen this happen families no one has ever been doctor than once person become doctor which inspire siblings and close friends soon you have army doctors. You’re never too old to train or even start training it good for your body and mind, it can inspire the people around you, it will improve your life and most important it is fun and enjoyable.

Swimmer, 99, ‘breaks world record’ in Australia

George Corones clocked 56.12 seconds at an official event in Queensland – a new benchmark for the 100-104 age category.

He eclipsed the previous mark, set in 2014, by 35 seconds. It will now be verified by the sport’s governing body.

Mr Corones, who is eligible for the record because he turns 100 in April, said he was “quite delighted” and “over the world” by the result.

“It was an exemplary swim for me, well balanced… and I was ready to hit the [wall] at the end very hard with my hand,” he told the BBC.

He said he had been overwhelmed by the “roaring” crowd on the Gold Coast on Wednesday. The event, in which he was the sole entrant, had been specifically staged for him to challenge the record.

“We have just witnessed history in the making!” the Australian Dolphins swim team said on its Facebook page.

‘It takes a while to get going’

Mr Corones, from Brisbane, said he was a keen swimmer in his youth but only began swimming again aged 80.

“I gave it up at the beginning of the war [World War Two], and I don’t think I had a swim of any description until I retired,” he said.

“I started swimming again for exercise.”

Mr Corones was aiming to beat the previous record of 1:31.19

He said racing “undeniably” challenged him physically, but it was manageable with preparation. On average he swims laps three times a week, and also fits in gym sessions.

“At this age it takes a while to get going… you get exhausted much more easily, but if you do it sensibly, the rewards are astronomical,” he said.

He attributed his success to his pacing and technique.

“My first dozen strokes were well balanced and the trick is to just carry it on progressively, putting a little bit of increasing effort in each stroke,” he said.

“I did that until the last 10m – I knew I was tired and done – but went on without any disturbance.”

The previous record of 1:31.19 was set by British swimmer John Harrison in 2014.

Mr Corones’s race took place just before the Australian Swimming Trials for the Commonwealth Games, which will begin on the Gold Coast next month.

Masters Swimming Australia said the record was pending official verification by the International Swimming Federation (Fina).

Mr Corones will challenge the 100m freestyle record on Saturday night, believing he can beat the current mark of 03:23.10, which was also set by Mr Harrison.

“I’m not a young man by any means, but I am really looking forward to it and confident I can do very well,” he said.
